“They make me feel safe” – Charlie Rule

Charlie Rule, says her “older sisters” make her feel safe and give her the confidence to play her natural game on the field as she gets set to head to McKellar Park with her team-mates to take on a struggling Canberra United.

Prior to the weekend’s clash, Rule picked out two team-mates in particular who lead by example and show what it means to be a Sydney FC player.

The 19-year-old is a relative newcomer to the squad however has shown maturity with her performances on the field which have put her within inches of Matildas selection.

And she credits two girls for the protection they offer.

“Charlotte [Mclean] and Nat [Tobin] are the best combination to have behind me and next to me. They’ve always got you covered, but they’re also great leaders. They lead the team very well, and they make me feel safe with them next to me,” she said.

“They feel like older sisters to look up to which is cool and we just have a close bond.”

Charlie believes that the Sky Blues are without a doubt the best team in the land.

“We have the best defence, best midfield, and best forwards in the league,” she said.

“As a team, we’re so connected, and as individuals, we’re all very good. We just put our head down and want to do the best for each other.”

In their last away fixture, the Sky Blues had their finger on the pulse smashing Melbourne Victory 6-3, Rule believes the confidence is high heading into this weekend’s clash with Canberra.

“Yeah, we feel really strong as a team. I think we’re just getting better each game, and the training is lifting us to another level, which is really good,” Charlie said. “I feel like we’re all connecting really well, even mid-season, which is great.”

The TikTok star has been playing for Sydney FC for many years but appears to be really enjoying her football this year.

“It’s just so much fun. I love playing for Sydney FC.

“We’re all such a tight-knit group and have good friends here, and it’s just so much fun when we get to play together,” Charlie said.

“Every game, we play like it’s our last and really combine as a group. I think that’s why we play so well because we’re such good mates.”

The team is building on each game, using their previous performances to see where they can improve. “We build on each game, and even being at our top, we can still learn from our mistakes,” Charlie said.

“Every game that comes, even if it’s Canberra, we’ve got to put our best foot forward because every team wants to bring out their best game against us.”

Rule and Sydney FC will take on Canberra this weekend and three points will go a long way to chasing a third consecutive Premiers Plate, with two games in hand over the rest of the pack.
