Sydney FC Academy find going tough in the Gong

Sydney FC Academy travelled to Wollongong on Sunday afternoon and found the going very tough with a very young squad.

With many of the squad under the age of 17, the young outfit may have been intimidated by the 2,000 strong crowd at WIN Stadium as they found themselves 5-1 down at half time with U17 Mitch Glasson’s penalty the sole Sky Blue goal in the opening stanza.

Most of what the Wolves touched turned to gold as they scored six overall from eight shots on target with 17 year old Oscar Fryer finding the net in the second half to give the Sydney side something to cheer about.

Sydney FC coach Jimmy van Weeren told Football NSW it was a fair result in the end, explaining that inexperience played its part in the scoreline.

“Consistency is a challenge,” van Weeren stated.

“The key learning for us is psychologically how resilient you are. If you cop one or two goals then you don’t end up with three, four or five.”

It was good to see U16 Joe Lacey get on for his debut in the heat of the battle in Wollongong as he looks to gain more match experience at his young age.
