Sydney FC have strengthened their defensive ranks with the signing of double A-League Championship winner Jacob Farrell on a season-long loan from English Championship club Portsmouth FC.
The 23-year-old defender joins with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
Farrell arrives with an impressive collection of silverware having played a significant role in one of the most successful periods in Central Coast Mariners history.
The Gosford-born defender was part of the Mariners squad which defeated Melbourne City 6-1 in the 2023 Grand Final before becoming a key member of their historic treble-winning side the following season.
His performances also earned him selection in the PFA A-League Team of the Season for 2023-24.
That success earned Farrell a reported $800,000 transfer to English Championship club Portsmouth in July 2024, where he signed a four-year contract.
Capable of playing at left full back or on the left side of central defence, the 23-year old is familiar with a number of the Sky Blues squad having started the AFC Asian Cup U23 2024 tournament alongside Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Jake Hollman, Alex Popovic and Rhys Youlley.
And he could line up in the season opening Sydney Derby blockbuster next month against the Wanderers where he spent seven games on loan last season.

“I’m delighted to be joining Sydney FC. It’s the biggest club in the A-League and a club that expects to be challenging for trophies every season, so that was a huge attraction for me.
“I know what it takes to be successful in this league and I want to bring that experience here and help Sydney FC have another successful season.
“The Sydney Derby is obviously a massive way to start the season and having experienced it from the other side last year, I know exactly what sort of atmosphere to expect. It would be pretty special to pull on the Sky Blue shirt for the first time in a game like that.
“I’ve had a really valuable couple of years with Portsmouth and learned a lot from being in a Championship environment.”
Sydney FC Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo believes Farrell will add quality, versatility and valuable experience to his squad.
“Jacob is a player who already knows what it takes to win in the A-League and he has spent the majority of the past two seasons in a very strong Championship environment with Portsmouth.
“At 23 he is at a really good age. He has already achieved a lot, but he still has plenty of development ahead of him and we believe he can perform at a very high level for us this season.
“He gives us versatility on the left side of defence, can play at full back or centre back and brings good physical qualities, competitiveness and experience of winning.”
Farrell progressed through the Central Coast Mariners Academy before making his senior debut in 2021 and went on to make more than 90 appearances for the club across all competitions.
He has also represented Australia at Under-23 level and was part of the Olyroos squad at the 2022 and 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cups.
Farrell will join his new Sydney FC teammates in the coming days as the Sky Blues continue preparations for the 2026-27 A-League season.
