Longest serving player extends time with the club

Hear from Rhyan Grant as he reflects on 17 years in Sky Blue

Sydney FC’s longest serving player and current club captain Rhyan Grant has signed a one-year contract extension that will see the defender remain in Sky Blue until 2027.

Having made his debut as a teenager back in 2008, Rhyan Grant has gone from strength to strength, and after 17 seasons has become the record appearance maker with 377 appearances and counting.

At the start of the 2024/25 season, he was given the captain’s armband and leads by example both on and off the pitch.

Having been a one club man throughout his career, Grant will remain a Sydney FC player until the end of the 2026/27 season, totalling 19 campaigns in Sky Blue, a feat that is rarely seen in Australian football, let alone World football.

Speaking on the extension, the 34-year-old knew that there was no other place for him to be.

“I love Sydney FC. This club means everything to me and it is all I have ever known.

“From when I first stepped foot on the pitch at Allianz Stadium to now, a fair amount in my life has changed for the better and I owe a lot of that to this club,” the skipper continued.

“Sydney is my life and it is where my family is and there’s nowhere else I would rather play another season of A-League football, with some great mates alongside.

“I can’t wait to continue to make more history with this great club.”

Grant made his debut as a 17-year-old against Perth Glory and has found success on and off the pitch when he welcomed his first child two years ago which has given him a new perspective on things.

On the pitch he remains as committed as ever and played the most minutes during the 2024/25 campaign which included Australia Cup, AFC Champions League Two & the Isuzu UTE A-League matches across the country and throughout Asia.

“What Rhyan provides us in leadership and experience on and off the pitch is so valuable and we are thrilled to see him extend his time with the club for another year.

“He embodies everything that we want in a player; hard-working, committed and willing to do everything it takes to win, and what he brings to this side is more than just football,” Talay said.
