The Harbour City club have produced some top quality final series match-ups throughout their 16 years of A-League competition. Since the women’s inauguration in 2008, the Sky Blues have gone on to feature in 16 finals (including current) with a 62.5% success rate. Two of our most memorable semi final showdowns took place just a year apart. Our 2021 April 3-0 victory against Canberra United and 4-2 win over Melbourne City in March 2022 will go down in history as some our most successful semi final crusades.

April 2021 – Sydney FC 3 def. Canberra United 0

The third ever finals match between two of the country’s most promising sides was a tough affair. Marked as their 21st A-League match-up, the game started with a bang after an opening goal from Mackenzie Hawkesby gave the hosts the advantage only 15 minutes into the match. A home game at former stopping ground, Jubilee Stadium gave Ante Juric’s side majority of the crowd backing. The next 50 minutes was a grudge match. No sides were able to capitalise on their chances. Despite only holding 39.1% of possession, the Sky Blues were able to secure the win after late goals from Clare Wheeler and a stunner from Ally Green from long range. In the 2020/2021 season, the Sky Blues won the Premiers Plate and made their eighth Grand Final appearance taking home second place.

March 2022 – Sydney FC 4 def. Melbourne City 2

One of our most iconic semi final matches did not start in our favour. An opening double from Melbourne City forward Hannah Wilkinson left the Sky Blues trailing behind 2-0. Sydney FC kept pressing to create big chances and in the 78th minute, Matildas star Cortnee Vine scored the first goal for her side with an outstanding header from the centre of the box. Momentum was running high and Maria Jose Rojas was next to draw blood, scoring in injury time to take the game to extra time in incredible fashion. Soon after, Sydney FC were unstoppable with a goal from Sarah Hunter in the 96th minute. Having broken the deadlock, the Sky Blues were ahead of their opposition by one goal. Hammering the final nail in Melbourne City’s coffin, Vine scored her second goal for the match after nearly two hours of game time, and the Sky Blues were announced as Grand Finalists. Two weeks later, the Sky Blues made history appearing in their 5th consecutive Grand Final. Despite falling short in the Big Blue clash against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC claimed the Premiers Plate and Grand Final the following season.
