Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant will play his 50th Hyundai A-League match for the Sky Blues this Saturday and admits to feeling confident in the right back role he has grasped in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old is in his fourth season in the A-League squad after being a member of the inaugural Sydney FC Youth Team in 2008/09 and is enjoying his current role.

“I-m enjoying playing at right back,” Grant said. “I-ve always been known as a bit of a utility player, which is good at times but I-m just enjoying having one role at the moment and I-m enjoying playing right back.

“If Crooky wants me to play somewhere else I-ll do it and give it everything I-ve got because ultimately I just want to play.

“I didn-t realise Saturday was my 50th A-League game but that-s pretty special, especially at a club like Sydney FC.”

Grant was one of Sydney FC-s best in the 2-1 victory over Perth Glory, earning praise for his tenacity from Coach Ian Crook after the match.

It was Grant who pressed Perth midfielder Liam Miller, dispossessing him before passing to Brett Emerton, whose delicate chip proved to be the winner at ANZ Stadium.

“I thought Rhyno (Grant) typified what we are trying to do with the way he pressed (Liam) Miller and turned over possession for our second goal,” Crook said. “As a team we didn-t do enough of it on Sunday but Rhyan was hungry from the first minute to the last and ultimately what he did in that instant he gave us what was the winning goal.”

Grant also enjoyed his tussle with former Sydney FC team mate Scott Jamieson in front of a healthy crowd of 22,128 at ANZ Stadium.

“It was fun playing against Jamo (Jamieson),” Grant said. “There was a bit of banter during the week and I wanted to get in his face and get under his skin because I know he doesn-t like it. We had a chat after the game and it was all in good fun.”
