Defensive improvements key for Corica

Sydney FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Friday night, with Head Coach Steve Corica praising his team’s performance in the 60th Big Blue.

“It’s just nice to get the win. I’m really proud of the boys, they put in a really good performance,” said Corica.

“They played really well and created some good chances as well but overall, really pleased.”

Corica was particularly pleased with the defensive performance of his team, which he attributed to the return of captain Alex Wilkinson.

“It helps obviously with the captain being back and I thought he was excellent tonight,” he said.

The coach also highlighted the recent improvement in Sydney FC’s defense, citing the team’s solid performance in their previous two games.

“I think if you look at the last two games, we’ve defended really well. Diamanti’s goal last week and obviously Brimmer’s today are exceptional goals, but overall, defensively with Wilko [Alex Wilkinson] coming back in, it’s more solid,” he said.

Looking ahead, Corica emphasised the importance of consistency for his team.

“It’s about having the belief that they showed tonight and doing it next week, it’s all about consistency, which we haven’t had all season and now’s the best time to show that.

“You get back to back wins and with the table is so tight, you can move up very quickly,” he said.

The win moves Sydney FC up the table and puts them in a strong position to make a push for the top spots in the league. With the team showing signs of improvement and a renewed focus on consistency, Sydney FC fans have plenty to be excited about heading into the second half of the season with the next challenge coming from the Central Coast Mariners next week at home.
