Captain’s Column: Matchweek 1 Is Here!

Well it’s funny how things turn out, last time I wrote we were gearing up for a huge Grand Final rematch, now we’re out to clip the Phoenix’s wings in Wollongong!

It’s a different start to the season than what we were expecting, but it’s a great opening clash nonetheless and I’m really looking forward to getting season 2020/21 finally underway.

The added couple of days preparation for this game will hold us in good stead, we’ve been out of quarantine for nearly two weeks now and it’s great to have some sense of normalcy back.

To spend Christmas with my family was really enjoyable and something I’d been looking forward to as we whiled away the hours in Qatar and hotel quarantine in Sydney.

My Christmas was relatively quiet. I spent Christmas Eve with my side of the family and Christmas day with all of my wife’s family. It was great to have the day off training this year, although I definitely didn’t get a sleep in with both my kids tearing around the house well before 6am checking if Santa had left some presents. The kids had a fantastic day, and it was just nice to spend time relaxing with all the family after being away for so long on our Asian Champions League campaign.

The regular season routine is back in full swing too, we’ll train on Friday before travelling down to Wollongong to spend the night before Saturday’s clash, as we would do during any other season.

You can feel the sense of excitement in the air within the squad, we all know the season start for us is imminent, we’ve seen the other squads play their first matches and we can’t wait for it to be our turn.

I know we’ll have a great backing in Sydney with our Members and fans watching on, and I’m sure we’ll see plenty of Sky Blue in the stands at WIN Stadium – a traditionally Sky Blue part of the state!

I can’t wait for kick off now, bring on Matchweek 1 as our quest for the ‘threepeat’ begins!

Sydney FC Captain
