Dunbar Rovers FC are Sydney FC’s Local Club of the Week and have won a $500 grant from St. George Bank after being entered into the competition by the clubs’ Junior Co-Ordinator Gerry Frittmann who discussed the club’s support of football in indigenous communities and junior football development.

Playing in the Eastern Suburbs Football Association, Dunbar Rovers FC are a club who have made great strides in their development of a junior football program despite the initiative being very young.
The club made their first forays into junior football by sponsoring junior clubs overseas through various charitable partners before establishing a weekly introduction to football program in Redfern for both boys and girls.
“Dunbar-s first contribution into junior football was in 2008 through an official charitable initiative,” Frittmann said.
“Dunbar supports ISF [Indochina Starfish Foundation] in Cambodia, by sponsoring an Under 14 Boys and Under 14 Girls team.
“In 2012 and 2013, supported by our sponsor Link Market Services, Dunbar established a fully sponsored weekly program at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) in Redfern for local girls and boys aged from 4 to 9 as an introduction into football.”
After making a name for themselves through these initiatives, Dunbar Rovers FC established their own junior football teams and, in what is their most unique trait, provided all the teams with fully qualified coaches.
“In 2013, Dunbar entered its first junior team into the local Eastern Suburbs Football Association competition,” Frittmann said.
“We also started running our own training hub for U5 -7 players at Centennial Park on Saturday mornings,” he continued.
“Dunbar-s point of difference is that unlike other junior clubs we provide fully qualified coaches for all of our teams on training and match days without having the charge any additional coaching fees.”
Frittmann said it was terrific news that Dunbar Rovers FC had been awarded the grant and was thankful to both Sydney FC and St. George Bank.
“Dunbar has been sponsoring lots of activities for the kids at the moment so the grant will come in very handy,” he said.
“We-re continually buying more equipment, probably agility poles and small sided game gear, so it will all go towards equipment and we-re looking forward to the Sydney FC players coming to our training session next week.
“We-re very happy to have won the $500 and thanks very much to Sydney FC and St. George Bank.”
