Sydney FC’s Academy has returned home following an impressive international campaign at the K-League Youth International Cup 2026 in Incheon, Korea Republic.
Competing against some of the leading youth academies from across the world, the Sky Blues finished second in Group B after recording three wins, one draw and one defeat across their five matches.
The tournament was an especially valuable experience for the young squad, with Sydney FC sending a group of U16 players to compete in the U17 division, effectively testing themselves against opposition a year older.

Hosted in Incheon, the competition featured 12 teams from five countries, including Spanish sides Racing Santander and AD Union Adarve, Danish outfit FC Midtjylland, Japanese club Kashiwa Reysol, Vietnamese academy PVF Football Academy and several of Korea’s leading K-League academies.
Impressive start against international opposition
Sydney FC made an excellent start to their campaign, opening with a 2-0 victory over Spanish La Liga side Racing Santander.
Goals from Dionn Nigro and Tyler Hawkett secured the Sky Blues all three points before they faced Korean opposition in their second fixture, playing out a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Gwangju FC.
The young Sky Blues returned to winning ways in their third outing, defeating Pohang Steelers 2-0 thanks to goals from Zoravar Singh and Zachary Harrison.

They then produced their strongest attacking display of the tournament against Vietnam’s PVF Academy, with Tyler Hogan scoring twice and Harrison adding another in a convincing 3-0 victory.
The result left Sydney FC unbeaten having not conceded a goal after four matchdays and firmly in contention for a place in the tournament final.
Narrowly miss out on a place in the final
Heading into their final group fixture against hosts Incheon United, Sydney FC knew that a point would be enough to secure progression to the final.

However, despite finding the back of the net through Harrison, the Sky Blues suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat, bringing their hopes of reaching the final to an end.
The result saw Sydney finish second in Group B with 10 points, behind Gwangju FC, who progressed to face FC Seoul in the tournament final.
Despite missing out on the opportunity to compete for the trophy, the overall campaign was a tremendous learning experience for a group competing against older opposition and some of the strongest youth programs in international football.
Malfara proud of Academy’s international performances
Tournament Lead Sergio Malfara reflected positively on the experience, highlighting the quality of opposition and the opportunity for players and staff to represent Sydney FC on the international stage.

“The tournament provided an excellent opportunity for our players and staff to test themselves against international opposition, including Spanish La Liga side Racing Santander and Korean clubs Pohang Steelers, Gwangju FC and Incheon United,” Malfara said.
Malfara was particularly pleased with the team’s performances, discipline and commitment throughout the competition, believing the experience would prove invaluable for the group’s ongoing development.
“As the Tournament Lead, I am extremely proud of the team’s performances, discipline and commitment throughout the competition.
“The experience was invaluable for our players and staff, both on and off the pitch, and a fantastic opportunity to represent Sydney FC on the international stage.”
The Sky Blues finished the tournament with an impressive record of three victories, one draw and one defeat, while keeping four clean sheets across their five matches.

For a squad competing in an age group above their own, the results were an encouraging reflection of the Academy’s development and the quality of its emerging talent.
“We return home with valuable experience, confidence and motivation to continue developing as a group and look forward to hopefully returning in next year’s edition,” concluded Malfara.
