While Sydney FC polished off Bayswater City SC in the Hahn Australia Cup Round of 32, the Academy had their blue prints across the entire pitch.
With seven Sydney FC Academy graduates named in the starting XI, the Sky Blues delivered a composed and clinical display away from home, progressing comfortably while two fellow Isuzu UTE A-League clubs exited the competition.
Captain Rhyan Grant lined up alongside fellow Academy products Wataru Kamijo, Tiago Quintal, Akol Akon, Zac De Jesus, Mathias Macallister and Gus Hoefsloot, while the matchday squad featured 11 Academy graduates in total.
The night also produced a series of significant individual milestones.
Tiago Quintal wrote himself into the club’s history books by becoming the youngest player to score a senior hat-trick for Sydney FC, finding the net three times at just 20 years and 35 days of age to surpass the previous record held by fellow Academy graduate Adrian Segecic who now plays at Portsmouth in the English Championship.
Seventeen-year-old Akol Akon continued his rapid rise, becoming the youngest player in Hahn Australia Cup history to register three assists in a single match, producing a mature and influential performance at just 17 years and 61 days old.
There were also memorable senior debuts for Academy graduates Ethan Dyer and Sam Lancaster, who earned their first appearances for Sydney FC after impressing through the club’s Academy and NSW NPL program.
Midfielder Joe Lacey also made a successful return to club football after representing Wales at last month’s UEFA Under-19 European Championships. Operating in the heart of midfield, Lacey won every one of his duels and recorded 35 touches in an assured display.
While the result secured Sydney FC’s place in the Round of 16, it also highlighted the continued success of the club’s long-term commitment to youth development.
The Academy continues to produce players capable of stepping onto the senior stage and making an immediate impact. From experienced leaders to exciting teenage prospects, the pathway is providing opportunities for homegrown talent to thrive.
