Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay says intensity and consistency will be key as the Sky Blues prepare for a crucial clash with Auckland FC, following an impressive performance and result last weekend.
Talay was pleased with both the outcome and the manner of the victory, highlighting the response from his squad after a strong week on the training pitch.
“Definitely pleased with the result and also the performance,” Talay said.
“That was a major factor for us. It’s been a good week with the group again.”
The Sky Blues head into the fixture with renewed confidence, with Joe Lolley continuing to build his fitness after returning from injury.
“Joey’s had a good week, which is very important for us,” Talay said.
“We still need to build him up, but we’ll do that through games.”
Setting the standard
Talay emphasised the importance of maintaining the same intensity shown in the previous match, regardless of the opponent.
“There was a great intensity to the game and that needs to be consistent every time we play,” he said.
“We always need to match what the opposition brings, and then our footballing quality can shine.”

Asked about external noise leading into recent matches, Talay was clear that performances matter more than words.
“You can talk a lot off the field, but the talking needs to be done on the field,” he said.
“The best response is winning games and performing well.”
Managing minutes and youth
Talay confirmed Lolley will continue to be carefully managed as he builds match fitness, with game time proving essential to his return.
“Training is important, but what the game gives you, training doesn’t at times,” Talay said.
He also spoke positively about Akol Akon following his impressive debut, stressing the importance of balance when managing young players.
“He’s very grounded, still very raw and has a long way to go,” Talay said.
“He’s got a bright future, but it’s important we protect him and put him into games — and pull him out — at the right times.”

Auckland challenge awaits
Despite Sydney FC yet to record a win over Auckland FC, Talay said history will have no bearing on this fixture.
“We’ve got a new squad this year and a completely different team,” he said.
“This is the first time we’ll play them this season, and our focus is on bringing the same intensity and performance.”
Talay expects a tough contest against an experienced Auckland side, despite their recent results.
“They’re one of the most experienced squads in the competition,” he said.
“They stay in games for long periods and create moments to score.”
Respect on and off the pitch
The match will see Talay come up against long-time friend and former teammate Steve Corica, though Talay insists friendships are put aside once the whistle blows.
“Once the game starts, it’s Jekyll and Hyde,” Talay said.
“We both want to win and be successful — then once it’s over, we’re friends again.”
Ladder importance
With the ladder tightly contested, Talay acknowledged the importance of securing all three points.
“This game is very important for both sides,” he said.
“A game in hand doesn’t guarantee points — you still have to go out and win.”

Focus remains internal
While transfer discussions continue in the background, Talay stressed the focus remains on the task at hand.
“There are things happening, but nothing 100% at the moment,” he said.
As for team news, Rhys Youlley is available for selection after serving his suspension, while Lolley remains in the frame to continue his gradual return.
“Joey’s been a huge part of our success this season,” Talay added.
“It’s important we keep him involved.”
“We want to play our brand of football, play with the same intensity as last week, and hopefully come away with the best outcome.”
