History will be made this Saturday night, as Sydney FC star Princess Ibini takes to the field for her 146th appearance in Sky Blue, overtaking the record set by legendary captain Teresa Polias.
The Ninja A-League match against Newcastle Jets at Allianz Stadium will mark a significant milestone in Ibini’s nine year career with the Sky Blues; a journey that began in October 2015 when she made her debut as a promising 15-year-old teenager against Canberra United.
Speaking ahead of the historic game, Ibini shared her pride in reaching the record-breaking achievement.
“Breaking this record means so much to me,” she said.
“To have worn the Sydney FC jersey for this long and to now become the club’s all-time appearance holder is something I never imagined when I first started out.
“It’s an incredible honour, and it’s a testament to the amazing people I’ve had around me at this club over the years—my teammates, coaches, and the Members and fans who have always supported me.”
Ibini also paid tribute to Teresa Polias, whose record she is set to overtake.
“Teresa has been a role model to me both on and off the pitch. She represents everything that is great about Sydney FC, and to follow in her footsteps is truly humbling.”
Polias, who will be present at the game to make a special presentation to Ibini, was full of admiration for her former teammate.
“Princess has been an incredible servant to Sydney FC, and she’s the type of player who embodies loyalty, dedication, and class,” she said.
“It’s a little sad to see my record go, but if anyone deserves it, it’s Princess.
“I’m so proud of her, and I know she’ll continue to inspire many more players to come.”
Sydney FC Head Coach Ante Juric echoed these sentiments, praising Ibini’s contribution to the club.
“Princess’ longevity and loyalty to Sydney FC are extraordinary,” Juric said.
“She’s a player who has always put the team first and consistently delivered at the highest level, winning many Championships and Premierships along the way’
“To stay at one club for 10 seasons in modern football is a rarity, and it speaks volumes about her character.
“She will undoubtedly go down as one of the greats in our club’s history.”
In her 10 seasons with Sydney FC, Ibini has become a fan favourite and a key figure in the team’s success, contributing to three Premierships and three Championships.
The 24-year-old has also appeared in eight Grand Finals, the most of any player in Ninja A-League history.
Saturday’s match promises to be a celebration of her career as the club and fans unite to honour her remarkable achievement.
A number of former team-mates of Ibini are expected to be on hand to support her on the day, as well as family and friends.
The Sky Blues faithful will also be on hand in large numbers to show their appreciation for a player who has become synonymous with the club’s success and culture.
Ibini has scored 28 goals in her 145 games so far for Sydney FC and represented the Matildas on eight occasions, scoring one goal.
Kick-off at Allianz Stadium is at 7.45pm following the Men’s match against Western United.
