Sydney FC and Canberra United have had their last game before the international break abandoned due to continuous lightning strikes and heavy rain. This led to the pitch becoming unplayable despite an eventful opening 37 minutes.

9’ WHYMAN SAVE – From a corner, Mary Stanic-Floody sends the ball into the box, and it finds the head of Sarah Clark, but Jada Whyman is there to stop it.
10’ IBINI CHANCE- Jordan Thompson’s cross finds the head of Princess Ibini, whose shot travels left of the post.
15’ DOS SANTOS CHANCE- Maddie Caspers lays the ball off to Ibini, and she squares it to Indiana Dos Santos, whose shot meets the hands of Chloe Lincoln. Canberra’s number one then saves the Sydney captains follow-up shot.
Match Report:
Sydney FC and Canberra United played a feverish opening 13 minutes before an initial 45-minute interruption.
The game resumed but only carried on for 24 minutes until it was abandoned due to fierce weather at McKellar Park, ending 0-0.
However, the match began frantically as both teams could not hold on to long strings of possession in the opening five minutes of play.
Canberra began to control possession, and the first significant chance fell after a Jada Whyman fumble. Minutes later, Whyman kept the score 0-0 when she saved a sharp header from Sarah Clark.
Princess Ibini had the next significant opportunity when her shot skimmed wide of the post after a Jordan Thompson cross.
After a 45-minute interruption due to lightning, Sydney FC came out aggressive when Princess Ibini and Indiana Dos Santos both had chances saved by Chloe Lincoln.
Both sides continued sniffing at the goal, challenging both keepers and keeping the game stalemate.
As the rain hammered down, The Sky Blues kept the ball in their opponent’s half. But, the game was interrupted again after a second lightning strike nearby.
As the pitch condition in Canberra worsened, the delay in the match would end in the game’s abandonment.
The match will be rescheduled to a new date.
Sydney FC will take a two-week hiatus due to the international break and will play the Western Sydney Wanderers on the 2nd of March.
