Sydney FC forward Fiona Worts is set to miss the next three months of the Liberty A-League season after having surgery to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in her knee.
The 27-year old English striker picked up the injury during an innocuous clash with an opponent in the Sky Blues 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar at Leichhardt Oval last month (December 22nd).
It means the former Julie Dolan Medalist is likely to miss the remainder of the regular season but could be back for the Finals Series.
“I went to shoot in the first half and there was a collision between me and the defender,” she said.
“I played on until the 85th minute and really didn’t think anything was wrong.
“It was very painful the next day and I had to go for an MRI which did not show good news.”
The forward says the two-hour surgery was “straight-forward” and seems to have gone well.
She will have another consultation with the surgeon in two weeks and will be in a brace for six weeks before she can start the rehab.
“I’m feeling generally optimistic,” she said. “It’s one of those things and I’ve been quite lucky with injuries so far in my career.
“It is what it is and I’ll get back fit soon and deal with it. It’s nice to be able to do rehab while we are in the season and be not on my own.
“When I come back will depend on how the recovery goes.
“Hopefully I’ll be back in time for the Finals Series and maybe even score the winner in the Grand Final.”
The striker had been on fire for the Sky Blues so far this season with seven goals in nine games for the club, including four in the AFC Women’s Club Championship in Uzbekistan.
