Sydney FC striker Victor Campuzano have been ruled out for a number of months after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a training session.
The 29-year-old Spaniard sustained the injury after jumping for the ball and landing awkwardly.
Subsequent scans and specialist assessments confirmed the ACL rupture.
Following the injury, Campuzano will return to his home country of Spain, where he will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation.
Campuzano said he was determined to attack his recovery with a positive mindset.
“It’s one of those things that can happen to any footballer and, unfortunately, this time it’s my turn,” Campuzano said.
“Of course, I’m disappointed because I was looking forward to the new season, but now my focus is on recovering as well as I can and coming back stronger.
“I want to thank my team-mates, the coaching staff and especially the Sydney FC medical team for all the support they’ve given me since it happened. It has meant a lot and I’m grateful to everyone at the club.
Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo said everyone at Sydney FC was behind the Spanish forward.
“It’s devastating news for Victor because he was working extremely hard and was looking forward to making an impact this year,” he said.
“Everyone at the club wishes him the very best with his surgery and recovery.
“Victor is a fantastic person to have around the group. He’s got a really likeable personality, he’s popular with everyone at Sky Park and we’ll certainly miss having him around the training ground.”
Campuzano was signed ahead of last season and helped Sydney FC reach the A-League Grand Final. He has played 24 times in Sky Blue and is entering the final year of his contract this season.
