In our ‘Where Are They Now’ series we’ll be taking a look back at some of our past players and hearing from them as they provide an update on what they’re up to these days.
First off the rank is former shotstopper, and A-League Memes fan favourite, Ivan Necevski.
Signed for the Sky Blues in 2007, Necevski made a total of 49 appearances for Sydney FC across all competitions.
The glovesman made his debut for the club in an exhibition match against David Beckham’s LA Galaxy in 2007, before becoming the club’s starting goalkeeper for their 2008 Pan-Pacific Championship campaign.
In and out of the side, Necevski’s telling moments came in the final half of the 2011/12 season, helping guide the Sky Blues’ to the Finals Series before being crowned the club’s Player of the Year.
After announcing his final match for the Sky Blues to be against English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, Necevski re-joined the Sky Blues for the 2015/16 season before departing for good in June 2016.
Spells at the Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets followed in the Hyundai A-League before the 40 year old decided to join NPL NSW Club APIA Leichhardt.
Hear from Ivan Necevski:
“After finishing my 11th year in the Hyundai A-League I decided to take some time off and be a stay at home dad,” he said.
“With that I also continued to play football, signing on to play part time with APIA Leichhardt in the NSW National Premier Leagues.
“I’m now in my 4th season with the club, where we finished runners up in the regular season and finished as Champions, beating Sydney United 2-1 in the 2019 Grand Final.
“Off the field, I’ve also been back in the fire protection industry for the last year. I’m working fulltime for DEM Fire and Essential Services Group as a fire tech.
“That’s about it. Life is still exciting with a family and two young kids, but I do miss full-time football.
“My life is now full-time work, part-time football, watching my son play for Nepean SAP U11’s and my daughter does dancing. I’m always mucking around with my cars as well, so certainly no chance of getting bored.”
