He only has a handful of Hyundai A-League appearances under his belt but Brendan Gan has already made a big impression, scoring twice in just six senior starts for Sydney FC and showing more than enough to convince most observers he has a bright future in football.
He only has a handful of Hyundai A-League appearances under his belt but Brendan Gan has already made a big impression, scoring twice in just six senior starts for Sydney FC and showing more than enough to convince most observers he has a bright future in football.
His obvious ability ensured the young attacking midfielder was a player in demand, but the 20-year-old has resisted other offers and this week signed a two year deal to stay in Sky Blue.
“It was a pretty easy decision in the end. I-m a Sydney boy so I always wanted to stay in Sydney,” said Gan. “I-m still young, still inexperienced and this is going to be an opportunity to further my career and further my development.”
The deal will see Gan join four of his National Youth League team-mates in the senior squad next season, and he believes Sydney will have learnt some valuable lessons from its current campaign.
“This club-s been a top-flight team since the start of the A-League. I think the team-s going to develop very well, and it-s just going to turn into a very good team. Hopefully in the next two years we can win some trophies.”
After coming to the club as one of its very first Youth League signings, Gan had to wait until late in the season to get his opportunity in the senior side but he was always confident he could make an impact.
“I thought I had to prove myself before I got the opportunity to sign,” he explained. “In the end Kossie did give me the opportunity to step up and hopefully I-ve done the job for him. The club-s offered me a position in the team next year and I-m very excited about it.”
Gan will be out to celebrate his signing when he and his Sydney team mates face off against the Wellington Phoenix in a crucial Hyundai A-League clash this Sunday at the SFS.
