Sydney FC’s Ninja A-League Women’s clash with Newcastle Jets will become part of a Sky Blue Christmas Party double-header at Allianz Stadium this Saturday night, following the decision to move away from Leichhardt Oval with its pitch not quite back to its usually excellent condition.
The game was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon (15th December) but will now take place at 7.45pm on Saturday 14th December, at Allianz Stadium, in a festive double-header following the Sky Blues Men’s clash with Western United at 5pm.
Sydney FC CEO Mark Aubrey explained the rationale behind the move, emphasizing the club’s commitment to excellence in Women’s football, player safety and providing the best possible footballing experience for Members and fans.
“Our Women need to be playing on an elite surface, and unfortunately, Leichhardt Oval is not there just yet,” he said.
“It’s essential that we prioritize both the safety of our players and the quality of the on-field football.
“We are working with Inner West Council and are looking forward to returning to Leichhardt Oval and making it our home as soon as possible.”
Aubrey also expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to reward Sky Blue fans with an early Christmas gift by bringing both the Men’s and Women’s teams together for the double-header at Allianz Stadium.
“Our Members and fans are now getting two games for the price of one next Saturday night, which we hope feels like an early Christmas present.
“It’s fantastic to have both teams playing on the same ground on the same day at Allianz Stadium, and we know it will create an incredible atmosphere.”
Inner West Council General Manager, Peter Gainsford said: “Inner West Council has worked hard to make Leichhardt Oval a hub for women’s sport. We are proud that Sydney FC A-League Women have made it their home ground and we remain committed to providing a safe, high-quality professional playing surface.
“Unfortunately, colder-than-average temperatures and increased rainfall in spring caused a delay in good growth conditions for the summer turf species.
“However, the recent warmer weather has seen the turf coming back strongly and the pitch will be in tip top condition for the January 5 match against Melbourne City.
“The upcoming $40 million renovation of Leichhardt Oval is predicated on making this ground an ongoing centre for women’s sport, including an elite and permanent home ground for Sydney FC the women’s team.”
Sydney FC Men’s and Women’s Members will be able to gain access to both matches and tickets purchased for the original Women’s match will be valid for the Allianz Stadium double-header.
Ticketek will be in touch with ticketholders who can no longer make the re-arranged fixture to provide an opportunity of a full refund.
