Sydney FC’s ‘greatest appearance maker in waiting’ Rhyan Grant says the Sky Blues ‘owe’ the fans a win and a performance against their biggest rivals as he prepares to overtake Alex Brosque’s all-time games record for the club.
Grant will surpass Brosque’s record of 267 matches when he takes to the field against Western Sydney Wanderers at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday night (7.45pm kick off).
It’s a milestone which has extra significance with it being in the Isuzu Ute A-League’s biggest clash, the Sydney Derby, and Grant believes the Sky Blues will pull out all the stops to send the Members home happy.
“If we can get all our fans out, I think it will make a massive difference,” he said.
“I think we owe them one with our performances and results this year, especially against the Wanderers our biggest rivals, so if they can come out, we can repay that faith and make sure we get the three points.
“It’s not just about supporting myself, but all the boys and it would be fantastic.”
For Grant, the only survivor of either club from the very first Sydney Derby back in 2012; the fact the match comes as he breaks Sydney FC’s appearance record is special.
“It’s cool how it works out, such a milestone game for myself against our biggest rivals.
“Obviously with the circumstances of this season and how we’ve been going lately, it’s a huge game in terms, so there are a few factors which are going to make it extra special.
“We’re always confident but we’ve struggled against them in recent times, so we are going to need to be at our best, but I think being at our home and in front of our Members and The Cove will really push us along.”
Grant will be presented with a gift to remember the occasion pre-game at around 7.25pm by Chairman Scott Barlow, CEO Danny Townsend and fellow Sky Blue legend Alex Brosque.
