Sydney FC beat New South Wales Premier League team Wollongong Wolves 3-2 as Branko Culina’s side made it three wins in a row ahead of its AFC Champions League home blockbuster against Urawa Red Diamonds.
David Zdrilic opened the scoring for Sydney FC in the first half but Wollongong fought back valiantly and equalised not long before the half-time interval.
Sydney FC coach Culina rang the changes before play resumed and two of his substitutions paid dividends with goals. American triallist Michael Enfield fired Sydney FC back in front with a solo effort and then Luka Glavas, who replaced Zdrilic as the lone striker, made it 3-1.
Wollongong pulled a goal back and went oh so close to snatching a draw with the last move of the match but Sydney FC goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, who came on for Clint Bolton at half time, saved the injury-time effort.
Sydney FC’s next game is its AFC Champions League versus Japanese league and cup winner Urawa at Aussie Stadium on Wednesday at 8.00pm. Tickets for the historic match are selling like hotcakes and, if you have yet to get yours, you can get them through Ticketek now.
