Two goals from American recruit Jasmyne Spencer gave the Sky Blues a perfect start to the season in what was a tough encounter at Lambert Park against an Adelaide side who were unrelenting in their pursuit of goal for the entire 90 minutes.

Sydney FC had the lions share of possession throughout the match, with Adelaide proving a stern test on the counter.

It was an end to end first half Jasmyne Spencer opened the scoring in the 38th minute. A perfectly placed cross from Samantha Johnson saw Spencer leap highest at the back post to convert after Casey Dumotn had earlier parried Adelaide’s best chance of the half rushing out of her box to smother Powell’s effort when she was placed through on goal.

Adelaide United started the second half strong with a chance from Lisa-Marie Woods hitting the top goal post as Sydney FC’s keeper Casey Dumont quickly gaining control off the rebound to keep a clean sheet.

Sydney FC found their footing as the second half wore on with Spencer putting away Sydney FC’s second goal and securing their win in the 69th minute, stabbing home from a corner kick after a brief scramle in the box.

Adelaide were not to be outdone however and continued to break late in the second half with Woods forcing Dumont into an acrobatic save to turn her cross-come-shot onto the post in what was one of their better chances of the game.

Alen Stajcic’s side have started the season in menacing form, and will travel high in confidence for next week’s clash with Brisbane Roar in round two while Adelaide will look to bounce back at home to Canberra FC.
