Sydney FC and centre half Tiago Calvano have agreed to a mutual termination of the defender-s contract with the Sky Blues to allow the Brazilian to take up an offer of a contract in the United States Of America.
Tiago joined the club from the Newcastle Jets in January 2013 as an injury replacement for Pascal Bosschaart, and will terminate his contract with immediate effect.
“I feel a little bit sad because I really enjoyed my time here at Sydney FC,” he said.
“Spending time with my team mates and the staff at the club was great but that-s football. We are like a family but the positive thing is I can get a contract for one year, with the option of one more.”
Tiago hasn-t played for Sydney FC since the 3-2 home win against Melbourne Victory in November after serving an eight game suspension, in the wake of being charged with unsporting conduct towards a match official during that game.
“My contract is finished here in May and I felt it was going to be difficult to stay, so I chose the best option for myself and my family,” said the 32-year old.
“I will really miss all of the boys and especially the Members and fans. I would like to thank them for supporting me through a very tough time, as well as the staff at the club,” he continued.
“I wish the best for all of the team and I really hope they make the Hyundai A-League Finals. I will be watching from America.”
Sydney FC Head Coach Frank Farina paid tribute to the contribution the Brazilian had made to the Sky Blues since joining one year ago.
“Tiago has been a model professional for us and has been a pleasure to work with,” he said.
“This was a good opportunity for him and we didn-t want to stand in his way. I wish him every success with his future career.”
Calvano played 12 games for Sydney FC and after an initial spell as an injury replacement during the Hyundai A-League season 2012/13, was given a one year deal at Sydney FC at the start of this season.
