Sydney Academy players’ U17’s Asian Cup run ends

Four Sydney FC Academy players have been with the Australian U17’s in Thailand for the AFC U17 Asian Cup and unfortunately saw their tournament end overnight at the hands of Japan.

Australia navigated their way through the group stage, winning two matches and losing the other and lined up a Quarter Final clash with the Asian powerhouses.

Mitch Glasson was sadly suspended for this clash against the Blue Samurai after picking up too many yellow cards in the Group Stage however other Sydney FC stars were given the green light.

Zach De Jesus started the match with Tiago Quintal coming on later in the contest for his second appearance of the competition.

Richard Nkomo was an unused substitute in the match against Japan, however he did get minutes earlier in the Group Stage against China and Saudi Arabia.

With the 3-1 loss, Australia unfortunately miss out on a spot at the FIFA U17 World Cup which they would’ve gained with progression to the Semi Final of the Asian Cup.

A great experience for the four Sydney FC Academy boys who will return to Australia soon and slot straight back into the NPL set up where they have been playing their football with the U20’s and First Grade teams.

Well done Mitch, Zach, Tiago and Richard.
