Sydney FC defeated Adelaide United 1-0 at the Adelaide Shores Football Centre on Friday night.
Scorer of the solitary goal was Jasmyne Spencer in the 68th minute.
Sydney started with majority of the possession, whilst the Lady Reds sat back and waited for the counter.
Opportunities were few and far between with Adelaide only threatening the goal twice with set pieces in the first 15 minutes with Sydney’s first real chance occurring in the 23rd minute, when Princess Ibini-Isei raced down the right wing towards goal only to be denied by Lady Reds keeper Kaitlyn Savage.
The Lady Reds struggled to get the ball forward with Sydney putting the pressure on the Adelaide defence and forcing errors, which provided goal opportunities for the away side in the 32nd minute and 40th minute.
The game opened up in the second half with both teams looking for the opening goal and the Lady Reds thought they had it, but were denied by the assistant referees’ flag in the 51st minute.
Soon after Sydney took the lead: Sydney keeper Michelle Betos with the goal kick, which went over the top of everybody including the Lady Reds defence and Spencer took full advantage, making her way towards goal and slotting the ball past Savage.
Sydney could’ve increased their lead in the 70th and 76th minute through set pieces by Ellyse Perry, but were denied yet again by Savage.
Adelaide host Perth Glory next week at Coopers Stadium, whilst Sydney FC take on Western Sydney Wanderers at Lambert Park.
