Sydney FC CEO Dirk Melton has applauded the Sydney FC Members and fans for their behaviour and support last night as a large and buoyant post-Christmas crowd descended on the Sydney Football Stadium.
A crowd of 16,007 attended the match at the SFS, the biggest crowd since the 2009/10 Major semi final against Melbourne Victory, and although disappointed by the 4-0 loss to Melbourne Heart there was not one eviction or arrest.
“The Sydney FC Members and supporters are to be congratulated for coming out in such good numbers last night,” Melton said. “The atmosphere they generated was fantastic and the behaviour matched the passion, which was exemplary.
“Unfortunately the crowd was not rewarded with the result we all wanted but the disappointment of losing at home adds to the plaudits that should go their way for their behaviour.”
The 16,007 crowd takes the Sydney FC season average up to 13,094 – a 63 per cent spike on last year-s average attendance of 8,014 – proof that Sydney FC is once again starting to resonate within the Sydney community.
“Everyone at the club from the admin staff to the players has worked hard to get out into the Community over the last six months and the results are showing with increased attendances. We now need to reward the Members and fans with some improved results at the Sydney Football Stadium to continue to grow as a club.”
Coach Vitezslav Lavicka also praised the support of the Sydney FC fans and acknowledged the result last night provides a test of character when the side travels to Wellington for a clash on Wednesday before returning to the Sydney Football Stadium to play the Central Coast on Sunday 8 January.
“We would like to thank the Sydney FC fans for coming to the Sydney Football Stadium to support us last night,” Lavicka said. “Sydney FC is lucky to have such great fans. Now we face a test of character against Wellington this week. We must bounce back.”
