Sydney FC have pulled off a major coup in securing platinum selling Australian artists The Rubens to play in a one-off performance at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) ahead of kick off in the Sky Blues’ home #SydneyDerby against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 27 October (ko 7.50pm).
The two time ARIA Platinum band will perform a four-song set, including chart sensations “Hoops” and “Never Ever”, in the perfect launch for the Sky Blues’ first home game of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.
This match is the first football game to be played on the sacred SCG turf in more than 33 years with over forty thousand people expected to watch the historic event.
The band are also huge football fans and are expected to raise the roof with their sound to ignite the usual white-hot atmosphere in the Sydney Derby’s newest venue.
Chief Executive Officer Danny Townsend said he was delighted to announce The Rubens’ gig, which is a first at a regular Hyundai A-League season game.
“The Rubens performing in front of a pumping SCG Sydney Derby crowd is the perfect pre-cursor to kick off our biggest and first home game of the new season,” he said.
“This will be a fantastic occasion to start the Hyundai A-League season in Sydney for both sides of the derby divide, and I think the anticipation for the game has now just raised a few notches.
“Sydney FC have always been leaders on and off the field and our commitment in delivering another Hyundai A-League first underlines how much we value the fan experience at our home games.”
Margin brothers Izaac, Elliott and Sam who perform lead guitar, keyboard and back up vocals, and lead vocals and guitar respectively, along with drummer Scotty Baldwin and bass guitarist William Zeglis are all devout Sky Blue fans and are excited by the prospect of performing in front of Sydney FC’s faithful.
“We are seriously stoked to be playing at the Sydney Derby! As a huge Sydney FC fan the opportunity is massive,” said The Rubens drummer Scotty Baldwin.
“The Sydney Derby is notorious for supplying the best sporting atmosphere in Australia and to have the honour of being part of this is just going to be unreal. Also being at the SCG is another big bonus.
“Bring it on! We can’t wait!”
