Sydney FC defender Nikola Petkovic has banged the drum ahead of Saturday night-s ‘Big Blue’, labelling the match as the “biggest derby” the Sky Blues will compete in and calling for the fans to pack Allianz Stadium.

“Hopefully the stadium is full of people,” Petkovic said.

“I think that this is the biggest derby. If we win we go up and this is a good chance for us to do that.”

Petkovic, who recently signed from Serbian team Red Star Belgrade, also praised the quality of the Hyundai A-League and likened its physicality to that of the English leagues.

“I like the A-League. It-s good,” said Petkovic.

“It-s a different style, kind of like England. You have to work really hard, although in football there is always pressure.”

Petkovic is confident he and fellow centre back Tiago Calvano are beginning to form a strong partnership, having only started a couple of matches together, and he has acknowledged Head Coach Frank Farina as the driving force behind his healthy transition to Australian football.

“We-ve only played two games together,” Petkovic said.

“Obviously you need a bit of time but I think he is a good player. He-s experienced and I know we will be ok.

“He [Farina] said to just keep working hard at it. He works with us and talks with us all of the time.

“We-ll take it game by game but hopefully this week against Melbourne we will win.”
