Matthews in disbelief following call up to senior Socceroos squad

Hayden Matthews speaks on being called up to the Socceroos for the first time

Less than 12 months ago, Hayden Matthews was yet to make a senior appearance for Sydney FC.

Fast forward to Friday 8th November 2024 and the 20 year old Academy graduate has just been called up to the Socceroos squad for the very first time.

And the defender is still in disbelief.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling and a really great accomplishment for me and my family.

“Representing Australia has been a lifelong dream of mine and to be able to be give that opportunity is an unbelievable thing for me,” Matthews said.

Matthews came on as a late sub to make his debut for the Sky Blues in January in 2024 and since then has barely missed a minute of football.

He was recently called up the Australian U23 squad and netted in a 5-0 victory over Vanuatu.

Now, he will be looking to cement a crazy year in football with a first senior cap for his country.

“I got a text message and my phone was just sitting there on charge and I’ve looked at it and gone “Mum, Mum you won’t believe this” and then we had a really nice moment together.

“If you had told me 12 months ago that I would be in the Socceroos I would have laughed at you to be honest. I wouldn’t have taken you seriously purely because of where I was at.

“I’ve been given this opportunity and it fills me with confidence and it should also fill everyone at the Academy with confidence,” he added,

“All the kids down from Under 13’s should look at this story and see how well and successful the club is doing and you can see that there is a really good pathway for them to develop.”

Matthews will play this weekend against Macarthur in the home opener and is keen to put in a good performance before heading into national team camp.

“I am really keen to put my best foot forward and stake my claim as to why I should be playing.

“A good performance this wekend will give me the bet possible chance to get some minutes while we are away,” Matthews concluded.
