Sydney FC’s young guns starred as the Sky Blues inflicted a dramatic 4-3 defeat on St George City in NPL at Penshurst Park.
With the recent departures of six NPL regulars and four of the squad currently working with the first team, Jim van Weeren selected possibly the youngest starting line-up for an NSW NPL match.
Drawing on the excellent production line from Sydney FC’s Academy, eight under-17 players and five more players from the under-18 & 19’s age groups were involved in the win.
Van Weeren said: “We have had a little bit of a mid-year rebuild, so it’s taken a few weeks for the side to acclimatize and adjust but I think they showed they are up at the level tonight.
“We had eight players under 17 in the squad so there are going to be a few learning moments, but as a club we are really proud of the entire group coming here against a tough opponent and showing that level of performance.”
Goals from under-17’s stars Oscar Fryer and Lachlan Middleton, a tidy finish from Kealey Adamson, plus an own goal following a Matthew Scarcella corner, sealed the win.
Sydney FC’s under-20s also secured victory over St George City with Louis Agosti and Ben Gibson both scoring twice in a 4-1 win.
