Sydney FC Head Coach Frank Farina is seeking to create a buffer zone between the Sky Blues and the 7th placed Wellington Phoenix as he prepares for Sydney FC-s vital clash against the Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday (kick off 5:30pm).
The Sky Blues sit fifth with seven games to go and head into the match off back to back wins. However Farina is not fazed by the Mariner-s current five game losing streak, and knows there is no definitive form guide in the Hyundai A-League.
“We could create the buffer,” Farina said.
“But as I-ve maintained I think there are going to be a lot of twists and turns still to go in this league and for any team that can string three or four wins together in a row it-s going to happen naturally that buffer.
“We see it every week, teams going against the form guide. We-ve seen that anyone from the bottom team through to the top team can lose or win on the day, so it-s a matter of who turns up.”
Sydney FC have scored the highest proportion of goals in the first half of matches this season and Farina has pinpointed transitional periods in games as the key factor in determining who scores on Saturday.
“We had a look at some stats of when goals have been scored throughout the league and we worked out that 80 or 90 per cent of goals conceded are usually in transition,” Farina said.
“They-ve had the ball and then they lose it and concede a goal and what that tells me is that transition is a very important part of the game.
“It-s seldom that you see goals that are the result of 20 or 30 passes and I think that with the Mariners some of them have been mistakes, but as I said that transition period is important for everyone,” he continued.
“They have got us twice this year, narrowly, and hopefully we can play well and get some points tomorrow.”
