We caught up with our new signing Diego Caballo to find out a bit more about his career in football.
What is it like to play football in Spain?
They compete at a very high level over in Spain. Here in Australia it’s still a relatively new league and it’s new to me as well so I need to spend more time to really see the differences.
How did you get into Real Madrid Academy?
I started playing at around 3 years old and then began to play in a local team in my neighbourhood.
At 15 I got the opportunity to join the Real Madrid second team and that’s when my professional career began.
It was a dream of my whole life as my family are Real Madrid fans and it’s the team I’ve supported my whole life.
Which players did you play with at Real Madrid in the Academy?
I trained with Real Madrid’s first team, and also with some top players at Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna.
I played with some of the greatest at Real Madrid with Benzema and Modric. At Deportivo we had players like Fede Cartabia and Carles Gil.
Who were you favourite players growing up?
Zidane and Roberto Carlos were my favourite players growing up.
What is the biggest game you have played in?
The most important would have been when I was at Deportivo Le Coruna and we faced a play off with Mallorca to reach La Liga in 2019 but sadly we lost 3-2.
Why did you decide to come to Australia?
It was an opportunity I couldn’t let escape and an experience that very few people have the opportunity to live.
It’s something for my family and for myself it will turn out to be very good. It’s my first time playing outside of Spain.
How have you found playing in Australia?
So far everything has been very good. It’s like a small family here at the club and this has made my introduction to the team much easier. I’m looking forward to competing and winning games in the season to come.
