Sydney FC’s Westfield W-League Head Coach Dan Barret has praised the attitude of his squad ahead of their second round clash against reigning Champions Canberra United on Saturday at McKellar Park (kick off 4pm).

Follow an opening day defeat to Melbourne City, Barrett said he and his squad were eager to atone for that loss, stating that attention to detail has been the key focus during their training sessions this week.

“To be honest the game cannot come quick enough,” he said.

“We are very eager to get back to the performances the team is capable of. We know playing the Champions away is always tough but we are looking forward to the test.

“The focus this week has been to ensure we do the little things right and we do them all the time,” he continued.

“There is no room in this competition for ‘that’s good enough’. You have to do the jobs that are asked of you every time or you pay the price.

“Attention to detail has been important and ensuring that the work ethic is at it’s highest standards all the time.

“The girl’s attitude has been good. We’ve put last weekend’s performance behind us, knowing the things that let us down and ensuring we are set for this weekend.”

While Barrett is missing key players Alanna Kennedy, Amy Harrison and Kyah Simon through national team duty he believes he has the quality in his ranks to overcome Canberra.

“They [Alanna, Amy and Kyah] are key players for us, no arguments,” he said.

“I expected when constructing the team that we may lose players from time to time due to the talent of the players we have on our roster.

“The players coming in this week are there to play. Competition for spots is always up for grabs each week and the players coming in are up for the challenge ahead.

“Canberra has always been a tough place for us to go in the past,” he continued.

“I believe it’s key for us to do the little things right all the time, to follow the game plan and to play our way which is all geared towards bringing out the best qualities of each individual in the group which will give us a collective gain.”
