Abbas grabbed headlines when seeking immigration in Australia after playing against the Qantas Australian u23s for the Iraqi u23’s side in an Olympic Games qualifier. Iraqi born Abbas joined Newcastle Jets in 2009, and then signed for Sydney FC ahead of the 2012/13 season. Abbas played every minute of every game in the 2013/14 season, scoring two goals in the process, and his performances earned him the 2013/14 Players’ Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year award. Abbas’ 2014/15 season was cut short by a serious knee injury however he is set to return to the fold midway through the 2015/16 season.
