Sydney FC defender Alex Grant says the squad is โexcited and readyโ for the challenge of Sundayโs Hahn Australia Cup tie against Sydney United 58 at Sydney United Sports Centre, describing the clash as a valuable test in the middle of a long pre-season.
With the Sky Blues coming off a win against Western United in the previous round, Grant believes the quick turnaround is exactly what the squad needs.
โIn a long pre-season you want games to come thick and fast โ especially competitive ones,โ he said.
โSydney United might be in the NPL, but we know theyโll be physical, theyโll be up for it, and weโll be playing on a surface weโre not used to. Weโre prepared for a tough match.โ
Respect for a Cup Specialist
Sydney United reached the Australia Cup Final in 2022 and have built a reputation as giant-killers in the competition. The defender went onto say that league form counts for little when it comes to knockout football.
โThatโs the beauty of the Cup โ if you find a bit of form, you can go a long way,โ he explained.
โYou put league results aside because itโs a one-off game, and theyโll be pumped up to take on an A-League side. Playing against the so-called โbig boysโ gives them an extra edge, so we have to be ready for that.โ
Back to Full Fitness
Grant is returning from a calf injury that saw him miss some important games at the end of last season and he is feeling good heading into the new campaign.
โPhysically I feel really good now,โ he said. โThe physios have looked after me and the coach has given me the time I needed to come back a bit slower than the rest of the boys.

“Iโm back in training and hoping to be in contention for the starting XI or at least in the squad this weekend.โ
Embracing the Role of Senior Figure
At 31, Grant finds himself as one of the senior members in a squad filled with emerging talent โ a role heโs happy to embrace.
โSome mornings I drop my little one at daycare and feel like Iโm walking into another one here with all the kids running around,โ he joked.
โWhen I was younger there were a lot more senior players, but now Iโm one of them. I enjoy nurturing the young boys, coaching them where I can, and helping them improve.

“You can already see huge improvements, and itโs exciting for the club, the league, and Australian football.โ
Watching the Squad Take Shape
With the club still active in the transfer market and potentially up to five signings to come before the A-League season, Grant is keeping a keen eye on who will be added to the Sky Blues roster.
โItโs important the club takes the time to get the right players in.
“Youโve seen over the years โ especially with visa spots โ if you donโt make the right signings, it can really affect your season. Itโs not just about quality, itโs about the right people for the squad.โ
Thriving Off the Atmosphere
Grant says he is looking forward to the unique atmosphere at Edensor Park, even if itโs a hostile one.
โAny atmosphere is a good atmosphere,โ he said.

โSometimes in the A-League we lack that, especially in big stadiums that feel half empty. I actually prefer it when youโre away from home and the crowd is on you โ itโs even better if you score and they get frustrated,” he added.
“Itโll be a new challenge playing on turf, but weโve got the facilities here to prepare and weโll be ready for it.โ
