Sydney FC has signed three-time Australian Women’s World Cup and two-time Olympic representative Kyah Simon for the Ninja A-League Women’s 2024-25 season.
The 100+ capped Matilda has won the A-League Championship twice and A-League Premiership twice with the Sky Blues.
She is a former Julie Dolan medalist, an A-League Women’s Golden Boot winner, a Players’ Player of the Year winner and Young Player of the Year recipient and is still the only player in the A-Leagues’ history to win all four prestigious awards in the one season – 2010-11.
Simon was also part of the Matildas squad which won the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2010.
Having spent a significant portion of her illustrious career at Sydney FC, Simon is excited to return home, bringing with her a wealth of international experience and leadership after years at the top of the game.
“I’ve always felt a deep connection with Sydney FC, winning is in the club’s DNA and is one of the main reasons for me returning.
“I’m excited to contribute to what is already a strong team.
“It’s quite nostalgic being back in Sky Blue and I’m looking forward to our season getting underway.”
Simon was part of the Matildas squad who helped bring to life Australia during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.
The 33-year-old former Spurs, PSV and Boston Breakers star has scored 29 times for the Matildas, including three crucial World Cup goals in 2011 and 2015.
She believes she can help affect future generations of Sky Blue Members and fans to become players.
“I believe this is an opportunity to continue to drive the success of this team on and off the pitch, and to inspire our future generations to go after their dreams and see where it can take them.
“It’s up to us as players, the Sydney supporters and sports loving public to keep the momentum going by showing up week in week out.”
Sydney FC Head Coach Ante Juric was equally thrilled to have Simon back in the squad.
“Kyah is one of Australia’s finest footballers, and bringing her back to Sydney FC is a huge boost for us,” he said.
“She made her name here, and her experience and leadership will be invaluable to the team this season.
“She knows what it means to wear this badge, and her passion for the game will lift everyone around her.
“We’re at a pivotal time for women’s football in Australia.
“The World Cup showed how much potential this sport has, and it’s up to us – players, coaches, and fans – to keep driving it forward.
“Kyah’s signing will help do that and we need the Sydney public to get behind this team and keep showing their support for women’s football.”
Sydney FC kicks off its 2024-25 Ninja A-League Women’s campaign away to Simon’s former club Central Coast Mariners on Saturday 2nd November with the first home game of the season a Sydney Derby at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday 16th November.
