Long-serving Sydney FC skipper, Steve Corica is preparing to write another chapter in his illustrious football career, with the veteran midfielder about to begin his fifth Hyundai A-League campaign with the Sky Blues after deciding to delay hanging up the boots for at least another season.
Long-serving Sydney FC skipper, Steve Corica is preparing to write another chapter in his illustrious football career, with the veteran midfielder about to begin his fifth Hyundai A-League campaign with the Sky Blues after deciding to delay hanging up the boots for at least another season.
The 36-year old has been a mainstay of the side since playing a starring role in Sydney-s Championship win in the inaugural year of the competition, and he-s looking forward to more success this season after making the decision to play on.
”I had a lot to think about in the off season,” said Corica. ”I spoke to a lot of experienced players and friends of mine and obviously family. I thought about it a while and my body still felt good and I wanted to play another year.”
”I thought I did alright last year, (but) it was a disappointing season and I didn-t want to finish off on a note like that. This season I-m hoping for a much better performance from all of us.”
Corica will captain a new look Sydney FC side in 2009/10, under the guidance of incoming coach, Vitezslav Lavicka, who arrived in Australia to take up his post on Thursday.
“A lot of changes have come into the club and that can only be good for it,” continued Corica. “The new coach coming in is exciting for all the players. We-ve got a lot of young boys so hopefully he-s going to lead the ship in the right direction.”
Corica will begin what could be his last pre-season when Sydney FC starts preparing for the coming campaign in just under two-weeks time, but when it comes to retirement, he-s keeping his options open.
“At the moment I-d probably say it will be my last season, unless I have a blinder then probably I-ll have to come back for another one,” he said “ We-ll have to wait and see again I suppose.”
The Sydney FC side will return to training on April 27.
