If asked to name the defensive options available to Sydney FC, Adam Casey isn’t likely to be the first player that springs to most supporters’ minds, but the attacking 23-year old made an impact on the right side of defence in the Sky Blues’ 3-nil trial win over the Sydney Tigers on Wednesday.
If asked to name the defensive options available to Sydney FC, Adam Casey isn-t likely to be the first player that springs to most supporters- minds, but the attacking 23-year old made an impact on the right side of defence in the Sky Blues- 3-nil trial win over the Sydney Tigers on Wednesday night, and enjoyed the opportunity.
“It does give me more space to move. Obviously the primary job there is to defend but I like to get forward and when we-ve got the ball, you-ve got a lot of space to run into and link up with the midfielders and strikers,” said Casey.
While he usually takes his place further up the right of the field, it-s not the first time the Canberra product has played at the back for Sydney.
“I played there a bit when Branko (Cullina) was coaching us. He put me at right full back in my first year here at Sydney,” explained Casey. “I guess in these pre season games Vitja-s (Vitezslav Lavica-s) going to try people in different positions and see what works well for the team. I-m happy to play wherever he puts me.”
After seeing his season slip away last year due to injury, Casey is back to full fitness and looking forward to the coming campaign.
“Everyone-s really excited for this season,” he said. “Everyone-s been enjoying training and the fact that we-ve got so many games is good for us as well, to get that match fitness and gel together as a team. The whole pre season this year has been done really professionally.”
“The last couple of years getting those injuries has been pretty disheartening but my goal this year is to keep fit and to get as much game time as possible. I do feel really good.”
Casey and his Sydney FC team mates will continue fine tuning their game next Wednesday night when they face State Super League side, the Northern Tigers in a friendly at Asquith.
