Hyundai A-League 2010 Champions Sydney FC in partnership with Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing today launched an unprecedented community program called ‘Scoring4Health- which will see the Sky Blues stars teach children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle through education in nutrition and exercise to help fight the huge issue of childhood obesity.
Captain Terry McFlynn and midfielder Nicky Carle launched the first of its kind initiative at Merrylands Public School in Sydney-s west while Scott Jamieson and Shannon Cole kicked-off the program at Old Guildford Public School.
Aimed at years 3 to 6, the program will run over eight weeks with every participating child signing contracts with the Sydney FC players where they promise to learn about healthy eating and exercise to the best of their ability all while having fun.
The players will present weekly modules to the children with information on healthy eating, exercise activities and tests on what they have learnt.
“We believe this is a one of a kind program. This is Sydney FC-s chance to make a genuine difference to the community that so strongly supports us,” CEO Edwin Lugt said.
“Overweight and obesity is a huge problem throughout the community. We know 25% of all children, and 61% of adults across Australia are either overweight or obese. Sydney FC, through its players and the game of football, will educate hundreds of kids and their parents every year on the importance of being healthy and active.”
“This is our flagship community program, which is at the forefront of our wide ranging effort to engage with the greater Sydney community. The program is going to be a very rewarding process for the children, their families and their communities.”
At the conclusion of each program, the children, teachers and parents will attend a Sydney FC game at the Sydney Football Stadium and a training session at Macquarie University.
“We are extremely pleased to be working with Sydney FC to implement such an inspiring program for Aussie kids. As professional athletes who-ve reached the top in their chosen sport, the Sydney FC players are in a unique position to engage the children in the benefits of a healthy lifestyle,” said Angela Saunders, Senior Dietitian at Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing.
The children, parents and teachers can refer to the official Scoring4Health website to see the ‘Activity of the Week- and other information on the program including photos and videos.
