Two members of Sydney FC’s current football staff have been honoured by being included in Football Federation Australia’s Teams of the Decade to celebrate their 50th anniversary of FIFA membership.
Two members of Sydney FC-s current football staff have been honoured by being included in Football Federation Australia-s Teams of the Decade to celebrate their 50th anniversary of FIFA membership.
At a Hall of Fame function in Melbourne today, Sky Blue-s Head Coach Frank Farina and current midfielder Brett Emerton were selected from some of Australia-s greatest footballers and coaches to be included in one of eight Teams of the Decade, with the selection covering 19 FIFA World Cup campaigns, 8 FIFA World Cup Finals appearances and 8 Olympic Games.
Farina was included as a forward in the men-s team of 1990-1999, while Emerton was listed as a midfielder in the men-s team of 2000-2013 that covered two World Cup Finals appearances.
“I-m delighted to be recognised among such a prestigious team,” said Farina.
“To be inducted into the Hall of Fame at any level is a huge privilege and I feel very proud to have been included.”
Brett Emerton said: “It-s an honour to be thought of in that regard.
“It-s absolutely great news, especially when you look at the calibre of players in the team.”
Football Federation Australia Chief Executive Officer David Gallop was pleased at the announcement and said it showed just how far football had come in Australia as it embraced the game-s multicultural roots.
“Today we embrace and celebrate our proud history and honour the pioneers who went before us,” said Football Federation Australia Chief Executive Officer David Gallop.
“We are proud of our multicultural foundations and the footballers selected in the Team-s of the Decade represent these foundations of not only football but Australian Society.”
