Sydney FC’s Foxtel National Youth League midfielder Max Burgess says the way the young Sky Blues season has panned out has been unexpected, as they prepare to face the Melbourne Heart at National Epping Soccer Stadium, Melbourne on Saturday (kick off 3pm).

The young Sky Blues currently sit 11 points clear in first place and Burgess said that the way Sydney FC has performed is testament to the morale in the dressing room and the efforts of the coaching staff.
“To be so dominant and so consistent is a bit unexpected,” Burgess said.
“It-s been a great season. I think it mainly comes down to the coaching. Steve [Corica] and Miro [Vlastelica] and the staff have really told us the brand of football they want us to play; possession based and real emphasis on consistency.
“We also have a great group of boys and mixing that with great coaching staff we-ve managed to find good consistency coupled with good performances,” he continued.
“It has been quite spectacular. It has been both rewarding and quite unexpected but it-s been good.”
Burgess has been a notable player all season and his spectacular goal against the Melbourne Victory at the weekend, a long range strike that found the top corner, has summarised his performances on the field so far.
“I-ve been working a lot on my shooting at training,” said Burgess.
“Steve has really wanted me to add that to my game so I saw the ball come from midfield, it was about 10 metres outside the box, and I-ve looked to play out wide. Then I-ve decided to cut in and have a shot on my weaker right foot. Luckily it went in.”
The Sky Blues have an 11 points buffer with only five games to go and can be considered champions elect, however Burgess said that while it may seem that way, the squad must take each game on its own merits.
“With only 5 games to go it-s hard not to think we-ve got it in the bag already,” Burgess said.
“We-ve just got to keep taking each game as it comes. We-ll prepare like we always do. It-s all down to us and the way we play.
“If we continue to keep holding the ball well and taking our chances and defending well like we have all season, then I think we should get the 3 points [against the Heart].”
