Sydney FC midfielder Rhys Youlley has marked his first A-League Men goal, but sets his sights on strengthening the Sky Blue’s defence ahead of their match against Melbourne City.
After opening his account in Sydney FC’s first win of the season, Youlley says his priority is protecting the backline and giving the players ahead of him the freedom to make their mark.
“I really want to help the team in any way I can,” he said.
“And especially in defence this year, I want to play a big part in helping the team keep clean sheets and hopefully get the other boys to score a few more goals.”

That ambition reflects the standards Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo has set for his side, with defensive discipline a key focus throughout pre-season.
“I think it’s something that we really talked about in the pre-season and something we wanted to build on this year is to be really solid at the back, no matter how the game’s going, and not let too many people in.”
The Sky Blues now face a Melbourne City side searching for their first win after taking one point from their opening two matches.
Youlley expects a difficult assignment at AAMI Park, but says Sydney FC’s attention remains on developing their own game.
“I think we just focus on ourselves and build on what we can do and build on the team that we want to become.”
While the first victory has lifted spirits around the squad, Youlley says Kisnorbo’s message has been to return to work and keep improving.

“First win of the season, so everyone’s feeling good. I think now it’s the main thing that we stay grounded and focus on the weekend’s game,” he said.
“It wasn’t perfect, the game, so obviously there’s always room to improve and grow.”
Competition for midfield places is helping maintain those standards, with Youlley welcoming the pressure from teammates pushing for selection.
“It’s so good having players behind you that want to take your spot. It makes you competitive in training. It makes you always switched on.
“Because you know, if you’re not at the level, then they’ll come in for you.”

And while his defensive responsibilities remain a priority, Youlley will continue backing himself when opportunities arise around the opposition penalty area.
“I back myself from outside the area,” he said.
“So I think it’s good that that final one goes in.”
Sydney FC will play Melbourne FC on Saturday 31st Oct, 5:00 pm. The game will be streamed live on Paramount Plus.
