2010 Valentines Day A-League Premiership
Falling on Valentines Day, Sydney FC’s A-League Premiership win over the Melbourne Victory in 2010, has remained a pivotal match in Australian football, the atmosphere equalling that of a Grand Final.
In the 33rd minute, Midfielder Karol Kisel scored a sensational volley from 30 yards away, putting the Sky Blues ahead 1-0.
Despite Melbourne Victory’s best efforts, the premiership win was secured by Socceroos legend John Aloisi, bringing the score to 2-0 with a brilliant strike from outside the box.
Played in front of a roaring home crowd at Allianz Stadium, the Sky Blues hurdled over Melbourne Victory to secure the Premiers Plate and complete a renowned season comeback.
2010 Grand Final – 4-2 penalties win
Barely a month after being named the 2010 Premiers, Sydney FC yet again faced Melbourne Victory on March 20 in Melbourne’s very own Etihad Stadium.
With the Premiership victory fuelling the Sky Blues’ bid to win, striker Mark Bridge put Sydney FC ahead in the 63rd minute, with Melbourne Victory’s Adrian Leijer later equalling the score in the 81st minute.
After a gruelling 120 minutes, the match went into penalties, with Melbourne’s captain Kevin Muscat involved in a historic miss, his ball hitting the goal post. After a crucial save from Sydney FC’s goalkeeper Clint Bolton against Marvin Angulo, Sydney FC’s Korean defender Byun Sung-Hwang sealed the 4-2 shootout victory, securing yet another victory for the Sky Blues against Melbourne Victory.
With a Premiership and Grand Final double under their belts, the Sky Blues proved to be the victors of the big blue rivalry in the year 2010.
2014 Australia Day A-League 5-0 away game win
Dominating the game from the outset, Sydney FC handed Melbourne Victory a 5-0 mauling in the 2014 Australia Day Big Blue clash, with the match still to this day being considered as Victory’s worst ever home defeat.
With the potential to win two consecutive Big Blue Derbies for the first time since 2010 at their fingertips, the Sky Blues were out for blood despite Melbourne’s strive to bounce back from their previous 5-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix the week before.
In the 11th Minute, Ranko Despotovic opened the scoring, followed by Alessandro Del-Piero’s penalty to double the lead only nine minutes later.
Gaining momentum, Sebastian Ryall remarkably released the ball into the back of the Victory’s net only five minutes after Del-Piero’s penalty, leaving Melbourne speechless at halftime.
A second goal from Del-Piero all but solidified the Sky Blues win, and with substitute Nick Carle grabbing a fifth with three minutes to go, Sydney FC conquered the match and cemented it as one the club will never forget.
2017 A-League Grand Final – 4-2 penalties win
Melbourne Victory being handed another defeat in a match of deja vu from 2010, the Sky Blues claimed Grand Final victory on May 7, with a 4-2 win on penalties after an extra time draw of 1-1.
A Sydney FC home game, Allianz Stadium was fired up with supporters from both sides, Melbourne Victory’s Besart Berisha claiming the lead 20 minutes into the game.
Sydney FC fought back hard in the second half, with Rhyan Grant’s close-range finish leveling the score, neither team being able to claim a win in extra time.
After a tense penalty shootout, Sydney FC prevailed in yet another 4-2 Grand Final win against Melbourne Victory, midfielder Milos Ninkovic slamming home the winning penalty.
With another Championship win under their belt, the 2017 Sky Blues proved to be one of the greatest teams in A-League history, having finished the regular season a whopping 17 points ahead of second place Melbourne Victory.
2019 A-League Semi Final 6-1 thrashing
As Sydney FC’s greatest finals win and Melbourne Victory’s heaviest finals defeat, the 2019 A-League Semi Final resulted in the Sky Blues crushing Melbourne 6-1 at Jubilee Stadium.
With the first goal by Aaron Calver being scored only three minutes into the game, the tone of the match was set.
Captain Alex Brosque, playing his last ever A-League match at home, followed with a stunning strike in the 43rd minute, Sydney FC having no time to celebrate before Melbourne Victory’s Leigh Broxham produced an own goal with a diving header.
Adam Le Fondre dominated Victory’s defence with two goals in the second half, and Milos Ninkovic capped off their historic victory at 6-1 in the 88th minute. A consolation goal was scored in the 91st minute by Ola Toivonen for Melbourne, but there were no celebrations.
Their reward being well-earned, Sydney FC were impressive from the first minute to the last, solidifying this 2019 Semi Final as one of the most important matches of the Big Blue rivalry.
