Mathias Macallister selected in U20s Australian side

Macallister Selected for Young Socceroos’ AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers

Sydney FC attacker Mathias Macallister has been selected in the Young Socceroos squad for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™ Qualification Phase.

Macallister is one of 23 players chosen by Young Socceroos Head Coach Trevor Morgan for the qualification campaign, which will take place in Vientiane, Laos from 25 August to 6 September.

The 19-year-old has been rewarded for his continued development with the Sky Blues, earning another opportunity to represent Australia at international level after featuring for the Young Socceroos at the ASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship earlier this year.

Macallister made three appearances during Australia’s successful ASEAN U-19 campaign, including a substitute appearance in the final as the Young Socceroos defeated Thailand 2-0 to claim the title.

His latest selection provides another significant opportunity for the Sydney FC Academy Graduate to gain valuable international experience as Australia begins its journey towards the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™, with qualification also serving as the pathway towards the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027™.

The Young Socceroos squad features 17 players from Australian clubs, with a further six based overseas. Fourteen members of the group were part of the squad that lifted the ASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship in June, providing continuity ahead of the qualification campaign.

Australia will open its qualification campaign against hosts Laos on Monday, 31 August at the New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane, before facing Malaysia on Thursday, 3 September and Indonesia on Sunday, 6 September.

For Macallister, the selection continues an encouraging period of development after progressing through Sydney FC’s Academy pathway and earning opportunities on the international stage most recently against Spurs for the Sky Blues and starting the last two .

The Young Socceroos will be aiming to secure their place at the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™, where qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027™ will ultimately be determined.
