Sydney FC maintained their undefeated start to the Westfield W-League season with a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Magic Park on Saturday.
Jasmyne Spencer’s goal on 28 minutes was the difference between the two sides, despite the home side creating a number of goal scoring opportunities. The visitors took a 1-0 lead into the half time break and withheld plenty of Newcastle Jets pressure in the second half to claim their fourth win of the season.
Spencer was showing her pace upfront for Sydney FC and emerged behind the defence to block Claire Coelho’s goalkeeper clearance on the edge of the penalty area, following the rebound to tap into an empty net on the half hour mark.
Newcastle Jets started brightly in the second half with Rhali Dobson causing havic in the opening minutes after the restart and Amber Neilson played in Tara Andrews who missed the target.
Sydney FC goalkeeper Casey Dumont provided a number of second half saves to keep her side in the contest, claiming a clean sheet to go along with all three points.
Dumont tipped away Tara Andrews left footed shot from close range with twenty minutes remaining, and collected a number of deliveries from corners as the Newcastle Jets searched for a second half equaliser.
While producing plenty of activity in the opposition penalty area, Newcastle Jets were unable to find an elusive equaliser, and succumb to a narrow defeat at home. Sydney FC will next face Perth Glory away as they look to continue their unbeaten start to the league.
