Match Report:
Sydney FC battled through an intense Big Blue encounter, pridefully showing their defensive discipline and attacking confidence throughout the match. Melbourne Victory pushed late, but the Sky Blues remained composed to see out the game.
Interim Head Coach James Slaveski receives a massive boost for the Big Blue clash against Melbourne Victory with the return of five time Championship winner Charlotte McLean rejoining the Sky Blues squad for the remaining two games of the season.
Sydney FC are further boosted with the return of Riley Tanner and Willa Pearson who are also back in the starting lineup following their suspensions.
However, the Sky Blues will be without the services of Amelia Cassar, Skye Halmarick and Rubi Sullivan, who are away on duty with the Young Matildas at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup, while Bianca Gittany (née Galic) is unavailable due to personal reasons.
The Sky Blues started brightly, pressing high with youthful energy and showing strong organisation at the back, making it difficult for Victory to break through the defensive structure.
Victory looked dangerous from set pieces and nearly struck in the 16th minute when a dangerous free kick delivery caused problems in the area. However, Heather Hinz was alert, lunging forward to punch the ball clear and relieve the pressure.
Despite Sydney FC’s solid defensive shape, Victory eventually found a breakthrough in the 23rd minute. A defensive miscommunication led to a poor clearance near the Sydney FC box, allowing Rachel Lowe to capitalise and blast a powerful strike into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.

Sydney FC responded with determination, maintaining their high energy and improving their passing combinations through midfield. Their persistence paid off in the 31st minute when Victory’s defence switched off and played a loose pass at the back. Riley Tanner reacted quickly, pouncing on the mistake before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper in a one on one to level the scores.
The equaliser lifted Sydney FC’s momentum, with the Sky Blues pressing aggressively and forcing Victory into uncomfortable moments in possession. While Melbourne Victory continued to dominate much of the ball and looked threatening going forward, Sydney FC’s defensive organisation remained strong, winning key duels and second balls to frustrate the visitors.
As the half progressed, Sydney FC grew more confident, picking their moments to press high and create overloads, while also maintaining concentration at the back to withstand Victory’s attacking pressure.

Sydney FC came out of the break with renewed intensity, immediately pressing Melbourne Victory high and forcing mistakes at the back. Their pressure paid off just four minutes into the half when Riley Tanner struck again, intercepting a loose Victory pass before confidently finishing one on one with the goalkeeper to give the Sky Blues the lead.
The goal lifted Sydney FC, who looked rejuvenated and began pushing forward with greater confidence. Melbourne Victory, meanwhile, appeared unsettled and frustrated as Sydney’s organised defensive structure continued to deny them clear opportunities. The Sky Blues backline remained disciplined and compact, forcing Victory to play deeper in their own half.

Sydney FC nearly extended their advantage in the 58th minute during a chaotic sequence inside the box. Jodi Ulkekul saw her initial effort saved before her second attempt was blocked and deflected onto the post. The rebound then fell to Abbey Lemon, whose follow up was also denied by the Victory defence, eventually resulting in a corner for the Sky Blues.
As the half progressed, the Big Blue derby intensity began to show, with the game becoming increasingly physical and tempers flaring between both sides. Several challenges drew yellow cards as the rivalry atmosphere took hold. Despite Victory committing more numbers forward in search of an equaliser, Sydney FC remained composed defensively and continued to look threatening on the counterattack.
Lemon had another chance in the 73rd minute after bringing down a cross inside the box and beating her defender, but her shot was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper. Victory continued to push desperately for a breakthrough, throwing players forward and creating space for Sydney FC to exploit on the counter.

In stoppage time, Victory produced one final opportunity when a brilliant pass sent them through on goal, but Heather Hinz stood tall to block the powerful strike before safely collecting the ball, preserving Sydney FC’s advantage.
Sydney FC’s brilliant defensive effort and clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive in a fiercely contested Big Blue derby securing them a hard fought victory.
What They Said: James Slaveski:-
“Yeah, pleased with the result. I’m also pleased with the performance, particularly without the ball. I thought the girls fought for everything. Structurally, they implemented a lot of what we worked on during the week.”
“Both of our goals came from identifying weaknesses in Melbourne Victory and looking to capitalise on those moments. We did that on two occasions and Riley showed great composure to finish them. So overall, really pleased.”
“I think there is still everything to play for. Pride individually and pride for the badge. We don’t want to finish last, that’s unacceptable for this football club.”
“If you look at the games since I’ve taken charge, there hasn’t been one where I felt the girls didn’t give their all.”
“Yes, there have been moments where we’ve conceded goals and lost games, but overall the effort, energy, commitment and willingness to compete has always been there.”
“We just haven’t always got the result like we did today. We’ve got one more game to go and we want to finish the season as strongly as possible.”
“She’s a leader and a winner. She’s won multiple championships and she brings a lot of experience. I didn’t have to give her too much information — she quickly picked up on what we were trying to do.”

“As the game went on and Victory started chasing the result, the match became stretched and very transitional.
“There weren’t many chances to control the tempo, but overall in the second half they didn’t really create many chances. We probably had the best opportunity and should have scored another.”
“To be honest, I hadn’t really thought about it until before the game when we were talking with the coaching staff and realised I hadn’t won a home game yet.”
“But if you look at the performances over the last five or six games, they’ve generally been strong. The Brisbane game was excellent, and the Wellington game last week — especially the first half — if we took our chances we could have won that by four goals.”
“There are a lot of positive things we’re doing, especially considering the circumstances with players unavailable and injuries. So I’m really happy with the performance today. We’ve got one more game to go and we want to finish on a high.”
“There are a few sore and tired bodies, but I think everyone has pulled up okay for now.”
Riley Tanner:-
“Yeah, I think now I understand what the Big Blue rivalry is all about. I’m really proud of the team and the way we fought right through the 90 minutes. We’ve been working so hard with James, so it feels really good to see that hard work pay off.”
“At half-time we spoke about how it was probably one of our sloppiest first-half performances. We just couldn’t keep the ball.”
“We reminded ourselves that that’s not how we play – we’re a team that can keep possession.”
“We were lucky to go into halftime level, and we knew we had so much more to give in the second half. We’re really proud that we were able to come out and show that.”
“It’s really pleasing. The way we’ve been playing all year, especially since James came in, we knew we weren’t a bottom-of-the-table team.”
“Melbourne Victory are a very strong team, so we’re proud of the way we fought today.”
“We don’t believe we deserve to be at the bottom of the table. We know the quality we have in this squad. We’re here to fight, and we’ve still got one more game left this season, so we’re excited to finish strong.”
“I think it’s brought a new sense of hope. His tactics have given us something fresh to work towards and grow into.”
“Everyone has belief in what he’s trying to do, and we’re really excited about it.”
“We’re going to fight again. We want to finish the season strongly and go out there to take another win.”
