Eight Sydney FC Legends Named in PFA Team of the Second Decade

Alex Wilkinson named captain of team of the decade

Sydney FC has dominated Professional Footballers Australia’s A-League Men Team of the Second Decade, with eight current and former Sky Blues recognised.

Former Sydney FC Championship-winning defender Alex Wilkinson was voted captain of the side after receiving the most votes from his peers, while current Sky Blues skipper Rhyan Grant joined him in the starting XI.

They were named alongside Sydney FC greats Danny Vukovic, Luke Brattan, Anthony Cáceres, Milos Ninković and Kosta Barbarouses, with former Sky Blues Head Coach Steve Corica selected as the team’s Head Coach of the Decade.

The honours reflect a period of unprecedented success for Sydney FC, with the club winning three A-League Championships, three Premierships and two Australia Cups during the decade – achievements built on the contribution of these outstanding individuals.

Wilkinson, who wore the Sky Blue shirt for seven seasons and captained the club to a Championship and Premiership double in 2020, said he was humbled by the recognition.

“Being picked for the team of the decade is such an incredible honour,” Wilkinson said.

“To be recognised in this way is very special, not only because it’s voted on by fellow professionals, but because it reflects consistency over a long period of time.

“It’s incredible to be included alongside so many wonderful players, many of whom are among the best our league has ever seen.

“To also be named captain makes this recognition even more special, and it’s an honour I take a huge amount of pride in.”

PFA Chief Executive Beau Busch, also a former Sydney FC player, said the recognition reflected the impact Sydney FC players have had on the competition.

“This team reflects not only individual excellence but the collective contribution of players to building and shaping the A-League Men competition,” Busch said.

“Being selected by your peers is the highest form of recognition in our game, and this line-up represents the consistency, professionalism and quality that have driven the league forward over the past ten years.

“The PFA is proud to celebrate these players and the enormous role they have played in inspiring fans, setting standards, and creating lasting memories for Australian football.

“We owe it to these players to create a future for the A-League that builds on their incredible contributions and legacy.”
