Grant relishing cup test against Sydney United 58

Sydney FC defender Alex Grant says the squad is “excited and ready” for the challenge of Sunday’s Hahn Australia Cup tie against Sydney United 58 at Sydney United Sports Centre, describing the clash as a valuable test in the middle of a long pre-season.

With the Sky Blues coming off a win against Western United in the previous round, Grant believes the quick turnaround is exactly what the squad needs.

“In a long pre-season you want games to come thick and fast – especially competitive ones,” he said.

“Sydney United might be in the NPL, but we know they’ll be physical, they’ll be up for it, and we’ll be playing on a surface we’re not used to. We’re prepared for a tough match.”

Respect for a Cup Specialist

Sydney United reached the Australia Cup Final in 2022 and have built a reputation as giant-killers in the competition. The defender went onto say that league form counts for little when it comes to knockout football.

“That’s the beauty of the Cup – if you find a bit of form, you can go a long way,” he explained.

“You put league results aside because it’s a one-off game, and they’ll be pumped up to take on an A-League side. Playing against the so-called ‘big boys’ gives them an extra edge, so we have to be ready for that.”

Back to Full Fitness

Grant is returning from a calf injury that saw him miss some important games at the end of last season and he is feeling good heading into the new campaign.

“Physically I feel really good now,” he said. “The physios have looked after me and the coach has given me the time I needed to come back a bit slower than the rest of the boys.

“I’m back in training and hoping to be in contention for the starting XI or at least in the squad this weekend.”

Embracing the Role of Senior Figure

At 31, Grant finds himself as one of the senior members in a squad filled with emerging talent – a role he’s happy to embrace.

“Some mornings I drop my little one at daycare and feel like I’m walking into another one here with all the kids running around,” he joked.

“When I was younger there were a lot more senior players, but now I’m one of them. I enjoy nurturing the young boys, coaching them where I can, and helping them improve.

“You can already see huge improvements, and it’s exciting for the club, the league, and Australian football.”

Watching the Squad Take Shape

With the club still active in the transfer market and potentially up to five signings to come before the A-League season, Grant is keeping a keen eye on who will be added to the Sky Blues roster.

“It’s important the club takes the time to get the right players in.

“You’ve seen over the years – especially with visa spots – if you don’t make the right signings, it can really affect your season. It’s not just about quality, it’s about the right people for the squad.”

Thriving Off the Atmosphere

Grant says he is looking forward to the unique atmosphere at Edensor Park, even if it’s a hostile one.

“Any atmosphere is a good atmosphere,” he said.

“Sometimes in the A-League we lack that, especially in big stadiums that feel half empty. I actually prefer it when you’re away from home and the crowd is on you – it’s even better if you score and they get frustrated,” he added.

“It’ll be a new challenge playing on turf, but we’ve got the facilities here to prepare and we’ll be ready for it.”
