Sky Blue Named In U23 Matildas Squad

Sydney FC Liberty A-League Championship winner and U20 Matildas representative Shay Hollman is continuing her impressive football season with an additional call-up for the U23 Matildas Squad.

Hollman is leaving no time to waste, embarking on her next international call up. The 18 year-old who just won her second Liberty A-League Championship, is no stranger to Matildas duties. Kicking off her international career in 2022, Hollman was selected for the CommBank Junior Matildas squad for the AFF U18 Women’s Championship and during this time was named ‘Best Player of the Tournament’.

Earlier this year, the midfielder appeared in round one and two of the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers. The Young Matildas went on to win the bronze medal in Uzbekistan and qualify for the World Cup in Colombia later this year, with Hollman taking home a ‘Player of the Match’ accolade.

Earlier this week, Australia’s U-23 Women’s National Team Head Coach Melissa Andreatta finalised the 24-player squad featuring Hollman. The squad will participate in the Four Nations Tournament in Växjö, Sweden later this month.

“This is a squad of players that have put their hand up for this fantastic opportunity to play high quality nations
through their performances in the recent A-League Women and European football seasons.”

Melissa Andreatta on the talent filled roster for this Young Matildas squad.

“That 10 of the 12 A-League clubs are represented speaks to the evenness of the competition this season and is recognition of the developmental work that is being undertaken week in and week out.”

The tournament will be held during the May/June FIFA Women’s International Window at Visma Arena and Värendsvallen. The Young Matildas will feature in three friendly fixtures against the U-23 women’s national teams of Sweden (29 May), Germany (1 June) and Poland (4 June).

Andreatta expressed their excitement for this campaign and how the tournament could set up some of Australia’s finest talents to test their skills on the world stage, preparing them for rewarding careers and even potential CommBank Matildas training camps.

“Excitingly, with this roster there are a significant number of players that are in-form and showing high potential to be a future CommBank Matildas.

“Now it is about taking this opportunity to challenge and test themselves against some of the best in Europe, which has been at the global forefront of women’s football development in recent years,” Andreatta said.

The camp will begin in Sweden on Thursday the 23rd of May which includes all players and staff involved in the U23 Women’s National Team.

Well done and good luck Shay!
