Match Report: Sydney FC kept their top five spot on the ladder after a tense 94 minutes of football saw the Sky Blues draw 0-0 with the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford this evening.
After only two minutes, the Central Coast Mariners were on the attack when Jazmin Wardlow crossed the ball to Wurigumula. The international’s right-footed attempt was strongly blocked by Sky Blue keeper Jada Whyman.
Moments later, Sydney FC looked to capitalise on a free kick awarded to Mackenzie Hawkesbury down the right wing. A cross from Hawkesbury landed to Kirsty Fenton but her header from the centre of the box was blocked by Mariners goalkeeper, Casey Dumont.
Twenty minutes of tit-for-tat play saw the Mariners closing in.
Wurigumula dribbled the ball out wide, with McLean closely chipping at her heels.
The forward then delivered a cross to the centre of the penalty box to Galic but her strike was denied by Whyman, keeping the game scoreless in the opening 45 minutes.
The remaining half was off to a fiery start with Shay Hollman ferociously challenging Galic in the penalty area, denying the Mariners another attempt at goal.
Abbey Lemon and Princess Ibini weaved through Mariners defensive line, gunning for the opening goal for the match. Ibini’s return pass to Lemon narrowly fell short, falling into the hands of Ashley Irwin.
The valiant defensive effort and perseverance from the Sky Blues forced a 0-0 draw, shutting the Mariners out from the top eight.
